WSU’s Dan Ekuale, Hercules Mata’afa named to Polynesian College Football Player of the Year watch list

Two Cougars with Polynesian backgrounds in the running for Polynesian player of the year

Washington State’s top two defensive linemen have been named to the Polynesian College Football Player of the Year watch list, the school announced Thursday.

Senior nose tackle Dan Ekuale and junior tackle Hercules Mata’afa are two of 48 players on the watch list for the award that goes to the best Polynesian college football player who epitomizes great ability and integrity.

Ekuale, a 6-foot-3, 305-pound senior from Pago Pago, American Samoa, has played every position on WSU’s defensive line, but he found a home at nose this offseason, and will likely start at that position this fall.
