The statistics about the pet overpopulation crisis are staggering. There are about 70 million stray animals living in the U.S. and of those, only about six to eight million cats and dogs enter the nation’s 3,500 shelters every year, according to the Humane Society of the United States. Of those, about three to four million cats and dogs are adopted from shelters each year … and often dogs and cats are brought back to the shelter after being surrendered by their guardians.
And it’s not just the U.S. Animal lovers around the world battle with the pet overpopulation crisis, as we can see from this heartbreaking story from overseas. Recently, a man from a small town in England was out for a walk when he came across a pet carrier, abandoned in the middle of the sidewalk on a hot summer day.
